I just bought a 2002 Camry with 77,000 miles. We had to jump-start it because the engine wouldn't turn over. The instrument panel warning lights would come on, but the starting motor wouldn't run at all. But when we connected the jumper cables, strange things happened. First the burglar alarm went off (i.e., the car beeped repeatedly). Then, after we pushed buttons on the remote control until the beeping stopped, there was a slight buzzing and a blinking light on the instrument panel for a while. And the car didn't start immediately. We disconnected and reconnected the cables (and suffered through the above process) a number of times before the starting motor finally decided to work. It drove home OK, but I'm not sure what to do next. Will a new battery solve this? Or has the alarm system gone nuts? Should I take it to a mechanic? Or to a Toyota dealer? Looking for some expert opinion. Thanks.

A: SOUNDS LIKE THE BATTERY. YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS. TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE. LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

A: Toyotas do last a long time - I just bought one with 93K - but 130K is a lot of miles. Is it the V6 or 4-cylinder? If it's the 4, I don't think I'd buy it - 4-bangers are generally going to be more worn than 6's for the same mileage. Extra charges depend on local conditions. I can tell you, on the 4Runner I just bought from CarMax (base price $20,500), the extra fees came to $862.27 including the dealer fee of $149.
